Soap Toxicity

Fateh Srajeldin N.D.*

Improper washing of utensils by dishwashers may leave a film of soap, chemicals and detergent residues on their surface. Microscopic inspection of the surface of improperly rinsed utensils would reveal a film of chemical stains. This film of residue would dissolve in fluids in our food and consequently may adhere to the walls of the digestive tracks from the mouth to the rectum.

Once the soap residue reaches the surface of the cells, it penetrates the cell wall where it would interfere with the cellular function.

This interaction between the residue and the organic molecules of the mucus layer on the surface of the digestive tracts will break down the consistency of the mucus layer protecting the surface of the cells under the mucus layer. Once the protective layer is destroyed, it will leave the cells vulnerable and exposed to possible inflammations, ulcerations and bacterial/viral attacks.

Once the soap residue reaches the surface of the cells, it penetrates the cell wall where it would interfere with the cellular function and cellular cycle. This interference leads to an improper cell function and would alter the cellular cycle. Obviously, these changes will interfere with your health by introducing toxic chemicals into your body.

Two recent researches studies on the effects of ingested soap detergents with food on human health clearly pointed towards improper rinsing of utensils by dishwashers. One study was carried on at the paediatrics department at the University of Pittsburgh by Dr. Richard Moriarty, and the other was carried on at the University of Utah, school of medicine by Dr. Joseph Lyon. The results of both studies had linked ingested soap detergent to the following diseases:

- Crohn’s disease and oesophagus Irritation
- Gastroenteritis and
- Ulcerative colitis.

Washing and rinsing tips:

  • Always use fresh water.

  • Always wash, rinse and wring the washing cloth or sponge.

  • Always rinse dishes and utensils thoroughly after washing them.

  • Flip glasses and bottles over when letting them air dry.

  • Watch out for soap scum between the prongs of forks and in crevices.

  • Presence of foam or bubbles is an indication of a soap film is still present.

  • Re-rinse any utensil that has soapy taste to it.

  • Re-rinse utensils if surface is still slippery in your hands.

  • Re-rinse utensils before usage.
